A hysterectomy is an operation to remove all or part of a woman's uterus. The cervix may or may not be removed. In a subtotal (or supracervical) hysterectomy, only the upper part of the uterus is removed, leaving the cervix in place. In a total hysterectomy, the entire uterus and cervix are removed. A radical hysterectomy involves the removal of the uterus, tissue on the sides of the uterus, the cervix and the top part of the vagina. An open or minimally invasive procedure may be used.
